Europeanisation of Czech, Polish, and SLovak media in the context of three crises

The dissertation focuses on the level and form of Europeanisation of Czech, Polish and Slovak media in the intense phases of three crises - the migration crisis, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The theoretical starting points of the thesis are the theories of the public sphere. Its functional variant is considered in the context of the "European communication space" as a means or a necessary condition for eliminating various deficits of the European Union, especially the democratic deficit. Of the various approaches to conceptualizing the European public sphere, the research in this thesis adopts a Europeanization approach, through the lens of which the European public sphere is seen as a network of national public spheres that are increasingly "Europeanized", and which relies on individual national media in its empirical efforts to detect the European public sphere. A parallel quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the content published on Facebook by six Czech, Polish and Slovak mainstream media outlets in the early stages of each crisis identifies different levels of Europeanisation across crises, reflecting the different levels of competences that the EU possessed in each of them. Automatic tagging of musical compositions using machine learning methods

One of the many challenges of machine learning are systems for automatic tagging of music, the complexity of this issue in particular. These systems can be practically used in the content analysis of music or the sorting of music libraries. This thesis deals with the design, training, testing, and evaluation of artificial neural network architectures for automatic tagging of music. In the beginning, attention is paid to the setting of the theoretical foundation of this field. In the practical part of this thesis, 8 architectures of neural networks are designed (4 fully convolutional and 4 convolutional recurrent). These architectures are then trained using the MagnaTagATune Dataset and mel spectrogram. After training, these architectures are tested and evaluated. The best results are achieved by the four-layer convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN4) with the ROC-AUC = 0.9046 ± 0.0016. As the next step of the practical part of this thesis, a completely new Last.fm Dataset 2020 is created. This dataset uses Last.fm and Spotify API for data acquisition and contains 100 tags and 122877 tracks. The most successful architectures are then trained, tested, and evaluated on this new dataset. The best results on this dataset are achieved by the six-layer fully convolutional neural network (FCNN6) with the ROC-AUC = 0.8590 ± 0.0011. Finally, a simple application is introduced as a concluding point of this thesis. This application is designed for testing individual neural network architectures on a user-inserted audio file. Overall results of this thesis are similar to other papers on the same topic, but this thesis brings several new findings and innovations. In terms of innovations, a significant reduction in the complexity of individual neural network architectures is achieved while maintaining similar results.

The Legitimacy of Public Service Media in the 21st Century: The Role of Audience Analysis

The dissertation thesis addresses the current position of European public service media. After many years in the position of naturally monopolistic broadcasters, these media are competing for attention not only with a number of private media but also with an unlimited number of online platforms. The thesis analyzes the main potential threats to the legitimacy of public service media and gradually describes the normative requirements that are imposed on public service media primarily by legislation, but that also arise from a socio-historical context. Furthermore, it describes technological trends in the media sector that influence media consumption patterns. Finally, it covers the transformation of the relationship between public service media and their audience. The audience and their expectations are identified as the key source of public service media legitimacy. The research in the thesis aims to analyze to what extent and how the public service media in Europe use audience analysis when defending their own legitimacy. It also presents specific recommendations and results of the author's own quantitative pilot research on a representative sample of the Czech population, which verifies the potential of some of these recommendations on the example of the Czech Television's perception.

Values in fairy tale movies

This thesis deals with values in fairy tale movies. Its aim is to explore the possibilities of tracking values in fairy tale movies, because fairy tales serve as an important source of values for a child in the process of socialization. The theoretical part presents basic concepts of values, approaches to film research from a psychological point of view and observes the importance of fairy tales for a child. These topics are connected by socialization of a child and the role of media in adopting of values. Original research consists of content analysis of selected sample of Czech and Czechoslovak fairy tale movies. Certain characteristics, on which we can think about the values expressed in selected movies, are described. The research results indicate a trend of decreasing amount of contained values in fairy tale movies over time. Qualitative analysis examines various tales and describes value characteristics of particular characters in selected movies. Diploma project represents a contribution to the psychology of media and embraces media research as an important part of the socialization process.

The instrumentalisation and weaponisation of migrants, its impacts, and how the EU responds: the case of Belarus

This diploma thesis will focus on the weaponisation of migration as a hybrid threat posed to states in an attempt to destabilise their internal systems. The case study of the Poland-Belarus border crisis will be used to examine and illustrate how the European Union can address such hybrid attacks and how this reflects on the notion of the European Union as a 'normative power'. This will be done by conducting a content analysis of relevant news articles from EURACTIV, EUobserver, and POLITICO on the case study and by holding interviews with experts and academics. The notion of the European Union as a normative power will be explored through the lens of realism and neo-realism, focusing on the role of human rights and the European Union's reliance on sanctions. This will help to explore the conclusion that the conceptualisation of the European Union should be more nuanced, making it appear as a civilian power with strong normative foundations in practice rather than a solely normative power.

The media image of the second round of the presidential election on television

This master's thesis deals with the analysis of the media image of presidential candidates in the second round of presidential elections in the Czech Republic in January 2023. The aim of the thesis is to examine, through quantitative and qualitative content analysis of pre-election presidential debates, how individual candidates were presented on public and private television stations, and whether the principles of objectivity and impartiality were adhered to by the moderators. The first part of the thesis focuses on explaining key terms related to the subject matter, such as direct presidential election, media image, political communication, and the difference between public and private media. The presidential candidates and their political backgrounds are also introduced. The main part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of the pre-election presidential debates. The quantitative analysis provides precise data on the extent of airtime allocated to each candidate, the number and nature of questions asked, and other relevant factors. The qualitative analysis allows for a deeper examination of the course of debates, the moderators' approach to individual candidates, and the identification of possible violations of the principles of objectivity and impartiality. Analysis of the Sunday Columns of České Slovo and Venkov in Selected Years

The diploma thesis Analysis of the Sunday Columns of České Slovo and Venkov in Selected Years is devoted to the analysis of sunday supplements and columns of the daily newspapers České slovo and Venkov in 1933 and 1943. The aim of the thesis was to find out what these supplements and columns looked like, what topics they dealt with, what their character was and how they changed in the selected time horizon and historical context. A content analysis of the sunday newspaper columns and supplements was used to determine what these columns looked like, what their structure was, and what topics they covered. The analysis itself always included the first sunday edition of each month from 1933 and 1943. The analysis also showed that the sunday columns and supplements of both newspapers had an entertainment function and provided readers with mainly relaxing reading in the form of fiction and interest or popular science columns. In addition, it was found that these sunday columns were also largely aimed at women and children, to whom separate supplements and columns were devoted. The diploma thesis also explains how the different political focus of the two newspapers was reflected in these sunday supplements and how this content were affected by propaganda during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

Ukrainian Nationalism in Polish Print Media: Comparison of Selected Right-wing and Left-wing Periodicals (2014-2022)

This bachelor thesis deals with the relationship of Poles to Ukrainian nationalism between 2014 and 2022. This issue is examined through selected Polish print media (Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta Wyborcza, Do Rzeczy and Polityka). The aim of this bachelor thesis is to identify the main differences in the approaches of right-wing and left-wing media to topics related to Ukrainian nationalism during the observed period. Firstly, the issue of Polish-Ukrainian relations is introduced with an emphasis on mutual disputes over the interpretation of history. Then follows the justification of the selection of chosen titles, while their ideological differences are mentioned. After evaluating the previous approaches to media analysis, the selected research methods are presented. In order to answer the research questions and assess the validity of the hypotheses, a qualitative content analysis, an inductive content analysis, and a frequency analysis of the articles found using keywords related to Ukrainian nationalism are conducted. After a commentary of the results of each analysis, the periodicals are then compared with each other. Lastly, a discussion of all results is conducted, the research questions answered and the validity of the hypotheses assessed.
